What is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a temporary work authorization that must be directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study.

Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of part-time OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion). 

Eligibility & Compliance

To be eligible for OPT, you must be a degree-seeking F-1 student who is:

You are an F-1 degree-seeking student, in valid status, in good academic standing, physically present in the U.S., and your role is directly related to your major.

Reporting: Post-completion OPT students must report job information within 10 days; up to 90 days of unemployment is permitted.

STEM OPT: Not offered here. STEM OPT is a separate 24-month extension requiring an E-Verify employer plus I-983 training and 6-month validations. (If you need STEM OPT, consult your DSO.)

Program Snapshot

You can engage in OPT for a maximum of 12 months for each degree level you complete.

Format: Hybrid (Remote + NYC opportunities)

Duration: 3–6 months within your OPT period

Hours: 20–35 per week (weekly log required)

Compensation: Unpaid educational fellowship
